My thoughts on the Star Wars TV spot

Rey
I wasn’t going to do another Star Wars trailer review. But the TV spot was amazing! It makes more excited about Star Wars than all the other trailers combined. In this one we got to see Maz Kanata narrating and Rey acting. Kanata—voice by Lupita Nyong'o—has an incredible voice. Her voice is powerful, compelling and inviting. She tells Rey, “I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people.” I am guessing that she means Anakin Skywalker as a child. We got to see Anakin’s pod racer flag hanging at her castle. It’s really compelling to see Anakin, Luke and now Rey connected. There’s a strong sense that the Skywalker family symbolizes hope and optimism in the face of adversity. Kanata follows, “I have seen your eyes,” meaning I have seen your parents or grandparents. After all hope is lost, with the rise of the New Order, a new hope arises. I feel that the force awakens puts Stars Wars back to its original premise, optimism as the answer to a dystopian society. You root for the underdogs because they are able to accomplish small victories against the empire or new order. I feel that’s what the prequels were missing the feel that it’s the weak against the powerful. While the prequels felt like the powerful were protecting their own interests.

Maz Kanata

Kanata emphasizes, “ I know your eyes.” She means that she knows Anakin, Luke and now Rey will change the world. They will fight evil and move humanity forward. There’s a certain excitement in her voice. I know your eyes as in I know you will accomplish great feats. Meanwhile, Rey in this trailer—without a doubt—becomes the protagonist. We see her looking up to the imperial starships, there’s a sense of innocence, wonder but also power in her eyes. Then the action kicks; Rey hits a hooded man with her staff. This scene is exhilarating as it matches with Kanata’s speech ending. Rey has accepted her fate as a warrior and the hit is the first showing of her power. It is similar, to how Luke, in Return of the Jedi, drew his light saber and accepted his faith of fighting his father. Afterwards we see Rey leading Finn as she tells him, “follow me”.  Then it ends with Rey driving the millennium falcon. We also got a shot of Han Solo at an ice planet similar to Hoth. The trailer hints to a Solo and Rey connection. But I am leaning more towards the Luke and Rey connection. Any really excited for the Force Awakens, which hits theatres December 18th!
