My thoughts on Survivor's episode: “Play to Win”

Coming off last week’s episode, “Bunking with the Devil,” we saw Woo voted out. He was blindside by Takeo 2.0: Kass, Ciera, Abi and Spencer. I thought it was neat how Spencer and Kass got to work together. Their plan seemed to be to vote out Savage this week.

Pre-merge
Before, the merge we go to see Savage in his darkest light. He was bitter and insulting towards his fellow castaways, he said, “F them”. I am not a Savage fan, but I did feel for the guy in Pearl Islands. He was a strong leader voted out by a silly twist.  Ciera, on the other hand, was looking cute. There’s something magnetic about that girl that attracts me to her. Her and Cochran are my favorite castaways of all time. The weather that day was amazing. I really liked how the fog and the high tide current contributed to the excitement and nervousness of the merge. Which with 13 castaways, was the biggest in Survivor history.

Merge
During the merge, all the players sat to eat the merge picnic. The feast had: crackers, wine and grapes. Right off the get-go it was Takeo 2.0(Ciera, Abi and Kass) versus the Original Bayon (Jeremy, Savage and Tasha). After the feast both groups scrambled to get Joe and Spencer to join their side. Joe and Spencer shared a funny scene were Spencer used ‘Joe talk’ to communicate with Joe. ‘Joe talk’ means talking about strategy in terms of football.  I thought this showed a bit of jealously in part of Spencer, given the Joe is the most popular character this season. Both of these guys are extremely popular but I would say Spencer is smarter than Joe, while Joe is more athletic than Spencer. It is highly interesting how to big guys are the swing vote as opposed to the people on the chopping block.

Aside from the ‘swing vote’, the show developed another storyline: ‘Chaos’ Kass versus Tasha. Tasha doesn’t trust Kass because Kass screwed her over in Survivor Cagayan. Kass sees all the Original Bayon staying together. Therefore, she knows that she has ‘swing for the fences.’ In a desperate attempt to save herself Kass tries to stir up trouble by saying, “Tasha said Bayon’s no more.” Of course, everyone did not believe her. Then Ciera in her typical fashion[1] jumps in to try to defend Kass and throws Savage[2] under the bus,  ‘Let’s lie to them and see how it works out.’ This however, seems to backfire and further alienate her from the ‘Alpha Alliance.[3]’To be fair, the original Bayon excluded Ciera, Kass and Abi. They knew their situation was dire and they rather do something than remain quiet.

Merge Feast

Immunity challenge and Tribal Council

The immunity challenge this episode was, “Hard to Handle” from Survivor Cagayan. Each castaway stands on beam while balancing a pole with a ball on one hand. As the challenge progresses, each castaway has to go to a narrower section of the beam. Then he/she has lower his/her hand on the pole. The challenge is run in ten minute intervals, and the last person remaining wins. The results were not surprising with Fishbach going out first and ‘ Joe winning the game.

During tribal council Jeff captures the feel of this season, the idea of ‘voting blocks’ its easier for everyone to just vote out Kass this time around. Since she betrayed Andrew on the previous vote. Moreover, since the season is run by the ‘Alpha Alliance’ is different from the usual one’s where big targets first to go at the merge, as Stephen says, “What typical merge has three small women as the presumptuous  boot?”. Most of Bayon consists on strong players: Savage, Jeremy, Joe, Keith and Tasha. Most of them were targeted because they huge challenge threats. Now that they are in power they are reversing the situation. In the end everyone, sides with the Alpha alliance and vote out Kass. Only Ciera and Abi remain loyal to the Takeo 2.0. Wenthworth, Spencer and Joe go with the flow.

Looking forward
As Spencer said, “tomorrow playing may looking really different.’ It seems a big move is coming. It could be a Stephen versus Joe, an epic throw down. We'll see what happens! Thank’s for reading and I hope that I will improve in my critique of the show especially since I want to do something different than just a recap.

[1] Ciera acted this way on Blood versus Water. When she made up a lie about Culpepper.
[2] Funny how Ciera doesn’t seem to bode well with the Alpha male types, yet she had a crush on Boston Rob.  I guess the world is complex.
[3] The alpha alliance main core:Jeremy, Savage, Joe, Keith and Tasha.
